Top 10 Healthiest Dog Breeds

Dogs, just like us humans, can be susceptible to certain health conditions based on their genetics and dog breed. Usually, medical issues such ranging from cancer to skin conditions are known to be more prominent in one dog breed over another. However, there are some dog breeds which generally live healthier lives than others and here at The Pet Embassy we have compiled our “Top 10 Healthiest Dog Breeds” list.

Please note, that whilst we have included dog breeds we have made a lot of generalisations. We appreciate that every dog is different and there is absolutely no guarantee that just because your dogs breed features on this list that they won’t develop health conditions. If you disagree with us, that’s fine! We would love to hear it in the comments section below.

Here at The Pet Embassy, we cannot stress that whilst genetics are important, nurture is just as important to preventing certain health conditions. We always recommend a healthy diet combined with regular exercise.

Chihuahua

Temperament:  Alert, Courageous and Lively.

Chihuahuas are an entertaining and expressive little dog breed and one of the healthiest dog breeds in the world. The Chihuahua is absolutely brimming with confidence. Their personality makes them an adorable companion and they can really brighten up the mood in any home. Chihuahuas are one of the most loyal dog breeds around, so much so they are often described as “Clingy”; that’s how loyal this breed is in general! Their loyalty and personalities is just one of the reasons they are one of our favorite small dog breeds!

Due to their small size and expressive personality, chihuahuas don’t require the long walks that other dog breeds do, which makes them one of our least active dog breeds, they are equally as happy in a flat as they are in a massive yard, as long as they get as much attention as possible, which makes them one of the best dog breeds for apartments.

However, their small size means they can quite easily be injured when playing so it is best to avoid having them play with children or larger dogs if possible. Another positive of their size is that they are very easy to maintain and need regular brushing.

The Chihuahua can live up to 20 years old! In general, Chihuahuas live to be around 12 to 14 years. Chihuahuas are one of the oldest living dog breeds on the planet. Chihuahua do suffer from some of the same dental problems that other long-lived species, so make sure you keep their teeth in good health.

Australian Cattle Dog

Temperament: Brave, Obedient and  Protective.

Australian Cattle Dogs are a hard working dog breed and they are one of the most intelligent dog breed. They were originally bred by Australian settlers to handle herds of cattle on vast ranches and they are still used to this day. The Australian Cattle dog is known as a “shadow dog” as they show deep loyalty to their owners. The Australian Cattle dog is an extremely protective breed and will go above and beyond for their family.  The Australian Cattle dog will run around for hours without tiring, making them one of the most energetic dog breeds in the world.

The Australian Cattle dog are one of the most energetic dog breeds so they can get easily bored if they are not given ample exercise combined with mental stimulation. The Australian Cattle dog needs a regular job or activity to keep them busy and out of trouble! They excel at most dog sports and have a tendency to enjoy learning different tricks and solving puzzles!

The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the longest living dog breeds. They have bags of energy to burn and they will be running around in your lives for up to to 16 years!

Beagle

Temperament: Caring, Curious and Energetic

The Beagle is one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world. The Beagle is a loving dog breed that want to please their owner making them one of the best family dogs. Their loving nature means that they find it easy to bond with everyone in the family and consider them pack members. This dog breed is great with children and other animals. Beagles are a playful breed and their sturdy, compact frame allows them to be one of the best dogs for kids and families, and they can play without fear of injury to both themselves or the children. Beagles have an impressive sense of smell and are even used as detection dogs in some airports but due to their friendly nature they can do their job without making anyone uncomfortable! Beagles are one of our favourite medium dog breeds but the Beagle is also one of the gassiest dog breeds as they are constantly inhaling air through that strong nose of theirs.

Due to the Beagles small size they require less upkeep then some of the bigger dogs. They can be happy in a flat as long as they are walked regularly. A back garden would be preferable, but be aware, a Beagle may wander off when it is following its nose so it is much safer if there is a fence!

The Beagle’s short coat requires regular bathing and daily brushing. Naturally, other care includes a balanced diet and regular exercise to prevent obesity. The Beagle is one of the longest living dog breeds, living up to 12-15 years.

Also, due to the Beagles strong sense of smell it easily becomes distracted by attractive scents, therefore the Beagle needs regular and consistent use of a leash when out for walks!

Siberian Husky

Temperament: Friendly, Gentle and Outgoing

The Siberian Husky is believed to have originated among a tribe of Siberian nomads called the Chukchi. Siberian Huskies were bred to pull sleds over long distances in tough terrain in Siberia, which has meant they have evolved into powerful dogs with a great thick coat. Siberian Huskies are adored by many for their friendly and gentle nature, this makes them lousy watch dogs, but, they are one of our favorite large dogs as well as one of the healthiest dog breeds around!

Due to their origins pulling sledges, the Siberian Husky is one of the most active dog breeds and have copious amounts of energy. Ensure you take your Siberian Husky on daily long walks, hikes or runs to keep their strength in their legs. These elegant dogs are happy to go on any adventure, however, their thick fur is perfect for keeping them warm meaning they are a great dog breed for cold weather, they are also are prone to overheating.

The Siberian Husky features on the worst dog breeds for kids and families list because of the amounts of effort that the husky needs as well as their power which could hurt small children. In addition, Husky have a high prey drive and they may think of the little children as prey!

Shih Tzu

Temperament: Funny, Mischievous and Tough

More than 1000 years ago, these chinese “lion dogs” were the stuff of royalty. However, despite their proud lineage, they are a cheeky and mischievous companion that will offer you hours of entertainment to you and your family, which is why they are one of our favourite small dog breeds.

Shih Tzus are a dog breed that loves everyone they meet and will happily be introduced to strangers as long as they get their attention! They are an easy going breed, which makes them a great choice for seniors. Shih Tzus are of the least active dog breeds that are equally happy resting on your lap, but, like all dogs enjoy running around in a park. Shih Tzus are known to be difficult to housebreak so they will need lots of training early on to ensure your house is clean!

The Shih Tzu is a lazy dog that does not require the levels of exercise as some larger dog breeds. They are very happy lying on the sofa with their favorite person, therefore, they are one of the best dog breeds for apartments.

The Shih Tzu is a tough dog and they do not tolerate much. They feature on our worst dog breeds for kids and families list as they may snap if their patience is wearing thin! In addition, they are always at your feet and may accidentally trip up your children if you are not careful!

Pomeranian

Temperament: Cute, Extroverted and Intelligent

Pomeranians are the definition of cute. Their large eyes on their tiny faces surrounded by their puffy fur make them exceptional show dogs. Pomeranians are alert and curious about the world around them and they sometimes forget their size! Pomeranians have a loud bark and make excellent watchdogs. Their looks and their personality are just some of the reasons as to why they are one of favorite small dog breeds.

Pomeranians are not an overly dependent dog breed therefore make an excellent choice for older people or those who are busy most of the day. They are one of our least active dog breeds in the world but like all dogs they do enjoy going for walks, which makes the Pomeranian one of the best dog breeds for apartments. In addition, they are also one of the best dog breeds for seniors.

Fortunately, their coat is not as high-maintenance as it looks. Regular brushing and daily exercise is all you need to keep your Pomeranian happy. They are highly adaptable and once socialised can live in harmony with other pets.

Pomeranians typically live about 12 to 16 years, which makes them one of the longest living dog breeds. Pomeranians aren’t especially susceptible to many illnesses aside from luxating patellas (knee caps that have shifted out of place), so just be sure give your Pomeranian a good diet and take them for plenty of exercise which is why they feature on our healthiest dog breeds list.

Havanese

Temperament: Loving, Loyal and Responsive

The Havanese was originally bred as a companion dog by the Cuban aristocracy in the 19th century and have been labelled as a “Velcro dog” as they love sticking to their owners side. This little dog breeds thrives on being with their owners which makes them one of the best dogs breeds for seniors. They are known from suffering from separation anxiety, so it is best if someone is at home with them.

Greyhounds are low-maintenance dogs that thrive on the attention of their master. Due to their short coats they also need little grooming, which makes them one of the best dog breeds for a beginner. Greyhounds are loyal and affectionate with their family and they are not aggressive towards strangers, however, they will let you know if a stranger approaches with a bark or a subtle pricking of their small ears.

Believe it or not, although Greyhounds are known for their sprinting, their favourite past time is actually napping. Believe it or not, they this lazy dog breeds is one of our least active dog breeds. They are extremely well behaved when indoors and our a great dog breed for apartments or in a house with a small yard. However, they are also up for any adventure with their family. Please keep the greyhound on a leash until it is properly trained as they have a strong prey drive and will take off after a rabbit before you even see it!

Due to their thin coats, it is important to note that Greyhounds can get the shivers, therefore we recommend buying a warm coat for your dog if you live in a cold climate.

Poodle

With this level of intellect comes deep loyalty to their masters as long as they are mentally and physically stimulated. They are a friendly breed who love to play, which makes them one of our favourite medium dog breeds.

They need lots of space to run, a big back yard or a farm is the best place for them after all they were originally bred for herding livestock! The Border Collie could become very bored in a small apartment or somewhere where they could not let their mind and legs run free. They also thoroughly enjoy playing games with children, which makes the Border Collie one of the best dog breeds for kids and families.

Border Collies are an energetic and lively dog breed, which naturally means they are one of the healthiest dog breeds in the world. Due to this, their coat needs a lot of maintenance to ensure that there is no dirt and debris in there from their day-to-day activities.
