Top 10 Gassiest Dog Breeds

Just like humans, dogs get a little gassy from time to time but that is just natural! Some dog breeds may only let loose once in a while whilst others appear to be trying their best to constantly let loose. We can appreciate that this may not be for everyone, therefore, we at The Pet Embassy have compiled a list of our “Top 10 Gassiest Dog Breeds” to help you identify which dog breeds you may want to avoid if this is something that you don’t like. But we can assure you that no amount of gas is enough to put you off from loving your dog to the fullest.

Whilst we have tried to find a reputable study on which dog breeds are gassier than others, we couldn’t find such information. Therefore, everything below is based on interpretation of reputation only – so if you don’t agree (or do) please let us know in the comment section below!

In addition, we will also be talking you through ways to reduce your dogs gassiness in the future, to save you and your nose some trouble!

What Causes Gas in a Dog?

There are two main reasons why your dog is gasses, they are as follows:

There are many different bacteria and other microorganisms working in your dogs intestinal tract that produce gas. This is completely normal, however, different types of food produce different types of gases. For instance, when broken down food that produces carbon dioxide and other largely odorless gasses will not have causes a smell when your dog farts. On the contrary, foods that break down into methane and sulfur will most probably smell – really really bad!

Normal air ends up in your dog’s digestive tract. Usually this occurs when a dog swallows air when they are running or playing but can occur through other rare health conditions. As you can imagine, there is only two ways for this trapped air to come out of your dog!

How to Help Gassiness In Your Dog

Changing diet

There are many dogs that become quiet gassy due to the ingredients in their food. A lot of dogs become gassy because of the ingredients in their diet. Foods such as milk, beans and red meat have been known to cause gassiness in dogs.

If you feel that this is the reason that your dog is gassy then please consider chasing some dog food that is designed for sensitive stomachs and slowly switch out your dogs old food for this one. Please do this slowly as you don’t want to upset your dogs stomach or their schedule.

Take your dog out to get more exercise

Just like humans, getting your dog active and out in the yard or the park will get their intestines going and help them to digest their food. It may even be that whilst they are running around they let out their trapped gas!

Stop feeding your dog human food

Here at The Pet Embassy, we understand how tempting it can be to give your dog some of the delicious food that you are tasting so they can join in the experience ( we have given in many times, who can say no to puppy eyes!). However, whilst it is not the be all and end all it may be that you need to stop giving your dog human food until you get to the root of the problem.

The English Bulldog is a favourite amongst people who love staying indoors and need a cuddle buddy! The English bulldog was originally bred to compete in a sport called bullbaiting and also so drive cattle to market. Bulldog is one of the least active dog breeds. They are stubborn and lazy, which makes them perfect for the sofa! An older English bulldog may not be extremely enthusiastic about going for a walk or doing some exercise. However, they still need to be taken on daily exercise just like many other dog breeds. They are very happy just lying around the house, or on their owners lap!

The English Bulldog is a sociable and courageous dog, which makes this particular dog breed an exceptional watchdog. The English Bulldog has a tendency to be a slow learner, but once they understand something, they never forget it!

Whilst they are great around the house, they are known to stink it up with their farts! Unfortunately, the English Bulldog features on our gassiest dog breed list for a number of reasons. Firstly, the English Bulldog has a very sensitive system which means they have trouble digesting some types of foods, therefore, bloating up their stomach. In addition, they are a short-nosed dog breed which means they may have trouble breathing and eating thus they may swallow a lot of air when doing one of these two tasks.

Temperament: Hyper, Energetic and Curious

Boxers were originally bred to be guard dogs, however, today they are part of the working dogs group. The Boxer is often described as a “hearing” guard dog as they are watchful and alert. Which are just some of the reasons as to why the Boxer is one of our favorite dogs for protection. When they are not playing around, they are very self assured. They are great around kids as they are very patient. Whilst boxers mostly find homes as loving members of the family they still have high energy levels and require plenty of exercise.

The Boxer is one of the most active dog breeds in the world and they also have need for companionship. Boxers are ideal for people who will be with them most of the time or have someone in the house often. They need regular exercise to maintain a happy and healthy life. They are one of the most energetic dog breeds and love playing with other dogs as well as long walks and games are a must.

Boxers are one of the most gassiest dog breeds in the world and this is due to the fact they are known to suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal issues. Indeed, many Boxers are prone to bloating and have very sensitive stomachs! In addition, we don’t know if you’ve ever seen a Boxer eat, but it really is a sight to behold. They are extremely enthusiastic when they are eating, therefore, they can swallow a ton of air at any time.

Please note, that even though they are a medium size dog breed with lots of energy they are not “outdoor dogs”. The Boxer should not be left outside for too long for a number of reasons; their short nose does not cool hot air efficiently in the heat and their short coat barely keeps them warm in winter!

In addition, the Boxer is one of our favorite medium dog breeds as well as one of our favorite working dog breeds.

Temperament: Caring, Curious and Energetic

The Beagle is one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world. The Beagle is a loving dog breed that want to please their owner making them one of the best family dogs. Their loving nature means that they find it easy to bond with everyone in the family and consider them pack members. This dog breed is great with children and other animals. Beagles are a playful breed and their sturdy, compact frame allows them to be one of the best dogs for kids and families, and they can play without fear of injury to both themselves or the children. Beagles have an impressive sense of smell and are even used as detection dogs in some airports but due to their friendly nature they can do their job without making anyone uncomfortable! Beagles are one of our favourite medium dog breeds.

Due to the Beagles small size they require less upkeep then some of the bigger dogs. They can be happy in a flat as long as they are walked regularly. A back garden would be preferable, but be aware, a Beagle may wander off when it is following its nose so it is much safer if there is a fence!

The Beagle’s short coat requires regular bathing and daily brushing. Naturally, other care includes a balanced diet and regular exercise to prevent obesity. The Beagle is one of the longest living dog breeds, living up to 12-15 years.

Also, due to the Beagles strong sense of smell it easily becomes distracted by attractive scents, therefore the Beagle needs regular and consistent use of a leash when out for walks!

Size: Large

Temperament: Calm, Confident and Intelligent

A Rottweiler is a calm and confident dog breed and is very self-assured. Originally bred to drive cattle and pull carts for farmers and butchers. Their heritage shows through their broad chest and heavily muscled body.

The Rottweiler is a fantastic guard dog albeit with a mellow temperament. Rottweilers have a natural instinct to protect their pack and will be very demanding in their defence. Please ensure early socialisation to allow them to channel their power and protectiveness, otherwise, they may become a dangerous bully rather than the protector that you want in your household.

Owning a Rottweiler is very challenging but rewarding. Rottweilers are not the best for first time dog owners. You must be able to show your Rottweiler leadership so he can trust you and respect. Otherwise, there is a chance that your Rottweiler will assume the role of top dog for themselves, which can be very bad considering the intelligence and power of the Rottweiler.

Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent dog breeds and are very trainable if you’re firm and consistent in your actions. They may look to test you to see if what you say is actually what you mean, always be specific in what you ask and don’t leave any loopholes for this intelligent dog breed! Their intelligence is just one of the reasons why the Rottweiler features on our favorite large dog breed list!

Size: Small

Temperament: Charming, Playful and Sociable

The Pug’s face, with deep wrinkles around big, dark eyes and a flat round face, can’t help but make you smile. It is thought that the Pug’s name stems from the Latin word for “fist” as their face resembles a human fist. We love the Pug’s unique look, which is just one of the reasons why they are one of our favorite small dog breeds.

The Pug is a lazy dog for a lazy person, in fact, they are so lazy they are one of our least active dog breeds, they are happy to remain snuggled on the couch for hours as long as they are getting their attention, which is why they are a great dog breed for seniors.

Given that Pugs are a lazy dog breed and do not require as much space as other larger dog breeds, they are one of the best dog breeds for apartments. However, whilst they are lazy they are also known for their farts! The Pug is one of the gassiest dog breeds because of their short noses, they swallow a lot of air in their daily activities.

Pugs are a sweet dog breed and generally get along with everyone and everything, meaning they are one of the best dog breeds for kids and families and they also get along with other dogs.

The Pug is a great dog breed for beginners and first time dog owners who live a less active lifestyle.

Even though the coats are short, Pugs are a double-coated breed. Pugs are typically fawn-coloured or black. The coat is short and smooth, however, pugs still shed a lot. Additionally, the Pug’s bulging eyes need special attention. Because they protrude, the eyes are vulnerable to injury and irritation from soaps and chemicals.

American Pitbull Terrier

Size: Large

Temperament: Intelligent, Loyal and Obedient

The American Pitbull Terrier is a loyal and intelligent dog breed, that was originally bred to “bait” bulls. Throughout the years, this dog breed evolved into a farm dog and then a “nanny” as they were so gentle around children as well as having the loyalty to defend their owners until the death.

The American Pitbull Terrier is one of the most misunderstood dog breeds. They have wrongly gained a reputation for being dangerous, when in fact, they are a sweet and loving dog breed that is highly obedient and excels in agility games.

Sadly, if you own an American Pitbull Terrier you may be met with hostility from people who have this wrong conviction surrounding the temperament of this dog breed. Here, at the Pet Embassy, we just want you to know that we are with you and supporting both you and your American Pitbull Terrier in showing them that they are grossly misunderstood about the American Pitbull Terrier.
