Working dog breeds are generally a very intelligent type of dog that thrive when being given a task or some work to do. They are a very energetic type of dog breed and will follow you on any adventure. Working dogs were bred for many different reasons, however, they have all grown into the dogs that we love and care for today.
Please note that like any breed round up, all the following choices are subjective and are far from being exhaustive. We know there are many other wonderful dog breeds that could have made the list and the list is in no particular order!

Temperament: Hyper, Energetic and Curious
Boxers were originally bred to be guard dogs, however, today they are part of the working dogs group. The Boxer is often described as a “hearing” guard dog as they are watchful and alert. Which are just some of the reasons as to why the Boxer is one of our favorite dogs for protection. When they are not playing around, they are very self assured. They are great around kids as they are very patient. Whilst boxers mostly find homes as loving members of the family they still have high energy levels and require plenty of exercise.
The Boxer is one of the most active dog breeds in the world and they also have need for companionship. Boxers are ideal for people who will be with them most of the time or have someone in the house often. They need regular exercise to maintain a happy and healthy life. They are an energetic dog breeds and love playing with other dogs as well as long walks and games are a must.
Please note, that even though they are a medium size dog breed with lots of energy they are not “outdoor dogs”. The Boxer should not be left outside for too long for a number of reasons; their short nose does not cool hot air efficiently in the heat and their short coat barely keeps them warm in winter!
Temperament: Affectionate, Fearless and Strong Willed
The Great Pyrenees is very protective of its family and can in some cases be territorial. They will place their pack above everything else, which makes them one of the most loyal dog breeds ever. Sometimes they are reserved with strangers and can be aggressive to animals that do not belong to their pack. The Great Pyrenees can make great family companions due to their loving nature whilst also being gentle and patient with children.
Originally bred to be used as a livestock guardian, they need lots of space to run. Their size alone means they are harder to keep in shape than other dogs. They are one of our favourite working dog breeds as well as one of our favorite herding dog breeds. We recommend at least a good long walk daily to keep them in shape as well as a healthy balanced diet.
Grooming a Great Pyrenees can be a lot of work due to their size and their thick coats. The coats need to be maintained regularly.
Temperament: Friendly, Gentle and Outgoing
The Siberian Husky is believed to have originated among a tribe of Siberian nomads called the Chukchi. DNA tests confirm that the Siberian Husky is among one of the oldest dog breeds. Siberian Huskies were bred to pull sleds over long distances in tough terrain in Siberia. They did such a fantastic job that, not only are they known as one of the best working dog breeds in the world but we have also adopted them into our homes for companionship. Siberian Huskies are adored by many for their friendly and gentle nature, this makes them lousy watch dogs, but, they are one of our favorite large dogs.
Due to their origins pulling sledges, the Siberian Husky is one of the most active dog breeds and have copious amounts of energy. Ensure you take your Siberian Husky on daily long walks, hikes or runs to keep their strength in their legs. These elegant dogs are happy to go on any adventure, however, due to their thick fur keeping them warm in the arctic they are prone to overheating.
Temperament: Calm, Confident and Intelligent
A Rottweiler is a calm and confident dog breed and is very self-assured. Originally bred to drive cattle and pull carts for farmers and butchers. Their heritage shows through their broad chest and heavily muscled body.
The Rottweiler is a fantastic guard dog albeit with a mellow temperament. Rottweilers have a natural instinct to protect their pack and will be very demanding in their defence. Please ensure early socialisation to allow them to channel their power and protectiveness, otherwise, they may become a dangerous bully rather than the protector that you want in your household.
Owning a Rottweiler is very challenging but rewarding. Rottweilers are not the best for first time dog owners. You must be able to show your Rottweiler leadership so he can trust you and respect. Otherwise, there is a chance that your Rottweiler will assume the role of top dog for themselves, which can be very bad considering the intelligence and power of the Rottweiler.
Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent dog breeds and are very trainable if you’re firm and consistent in your actions. They may look to test you to see if what you say is actually what you mean, always be specific in what you ask and don’t leave any loopholes for this intelligent dog breed! Their intelligence is just one of the reasons why the Rottweiler features on our favorite large dog breed list!
Temperament: Alert, Courageous and Friendly
Originating from the Land of the Rising Sun, this Japanese breed is considered the National Treasure of the Country. The Akita of today is an extremely loyal companion that watches over his master and family members due in part to their roots as a guard dog. However, they can get defensive when it comes to unfamiliar people, places, and animals, so proper socialisation is necessary and they require their owner to be an experienced dog owner. The Akita is a fast learner and can be trained easily, however, they get bored just as fast, so a good training program should be developed to keep the Akita mentally stimulated.
The Akita is an intelligent and loyal dog breed, however, their independence and stubborn nature can be a problem if they aren’t properly trained. Akita’s require lots of training in their early stages. Using high value and high frequency rewards to motivate them is important. Once trained, they are incredibly loving and protective. Unlike many other large breeds, the Akita doesn’t require hours of exercise, they are generally happy with long brisk walks!
Akita’s have a thick undercoat and this is something that needs to be maintained regularly as they are also prone to malt.

The Bloodhound’s ancestors were originally bred in France during the medieval times to trail boar and deer. Today, however, they are an intelligent and active dog breed whose keen sense of small has landed them top jobs in search and rescue and in law enforcement. The Bloodhound is so skilful that their “testimony” is considered admissible in a court of law.
The Bloodhound is not a dog for beginners, they are known for the stubbornness and their sensitivity. However, if given early training and socialisation the Bloodhound can become a valued member of your family. With their nose always getting them into some sort of mischief, they can provide hours of fun and amusement. The Bloodhound is very kind and tolerant of children and will play with them for hours as long as their nose is stimulated! Hide and seek is a favourite of the Bloodhound, but we can guarantee you the Bloodhound will win.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dogs breeds in the world right now. They offer affection, companionship and energy whilst also being easy to train and incredibly gentle. They are excellent choices for therapy or canine assistance as they are one of the most intelligent dog breeds! They are a great family dog and the Golden Retriever develops a bond with each family member, not just one person. They are also one of the best dog breeds for beginners.
Due to their active nature, Golden Retrievers need a good amount of exercise to keep them healthy, dog games are recommended to keep this particular breed physically and mentally stimulated.

Due to their high intelligence, they need plenty of mental challenges to keep them from becoming bored. Their size combined with their intellect means they need a strong pack leader who can properly socialise them and train them, as well as keep them busy every day.

Labrador Retrievers make great pets for first-time dog owners due to their affectionate and loyal natures. The Labrador is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world and they are frequently trained to aid those with blindness or autism. They are known for being calm and gentle, meaning they are a great family dog as well as a great companion to share the home with as well as being one of the best dog breed for kids and families. In addition, Labrador Retrievers are one of the best dog breeds for seniors. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most loyal dog breeds to their family, and develop bonds with each member, not just with one person. They are friendly to everyone they meet and get along with other animals in the household.

Infact, they are one of the best working dog breeds. The German Shepherd is one of the most intelligent dog breeds which means they excel in their ability to follow command and their bravery. Their main mission was to serve and obey their master. The combination of their intelligence and their instinctual willingness to learn and obey makes them one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world as well as one of our favourite working dog breeds. When trained and socialised properly, their stable obedient temperament allows them to bond with all family members as they consider them to be part of their pack. This dog breed is one of the best guarding breeds and they will do anything, even put their lives at risk, to protect their pack. This makes the German Shepherd one of the best dog breeds for protection.
Due to their origins, they need to be kept occupied both mentally and physically therefore they require at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day to ensure they aren’t bored. German Shepherds have a lot of energy and require large amounts of movement everyday to burn their energy!
Like the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherds are double-coated dogs therefore they require regular grooming to keep their coats nice and healthy. Their coat should be brushed regularly as this can alert you to health and skin problems such as hot spots, hair loss or dry skin.
