If you have always wanted a canine companion but have always found yourself sneezing and scratching around dogs, The Pet Embassy has compiled a list of our favourite Hypoallergenic Small Dog Breeds so you can enjoy the wonders of a canine companion without being uncomfortable. These dog breeds are small dog breed who don’t shed as much as other dog breeds, therefore, these dog breeds are best for people with allergies.

Please note that like any breed round up, all the following choices are subjective and are far from being exhaustive. We know there are many other wonderful dog breeds that could have made the list and the list is in no particular order!

Toy Poodles are well-known and versatile breed. Toy Poodles respond well to training and are able to thrive in a number of households, whether you are a senior or a beginner. They thrive in homes with children. The Toy Poodle is protective of his home and family, and if strangers approach your house, they are known to sound a warning bark to let you know. Due to their fierce loyalty, although the Toy Poodle is affectionate with their family, they may take a while to warm up to new people.

The combination of their playful nature and their level of intelligence are some of the main reasons why the Toy Poodle is one of our favourite medium sized dogs. However, obedience training is essential in keeping your Toy Poodle mentally and physically stimulated. In addition, they also should be taken for exercise daily and they enjoy dog games. Toy Poodles are a lovely addition to the small hypoallergenic dog breed list!

The Miniature Schnauzer is an extremely friendly dog breed, who loves to be the centre of attention and will always be around you wherever you are. The Miniature Schnauzer loves to have fun and run around but they also enjoy lying on the couch with their favourite people, which if you are looking for a hypoallergenic dog breed is perfect as you can cuddle them all you want!

The Miniature Schnauzer is a very intelligent dog breed, therefore, very easy to train. However, this intelligence also comes with some problems. Their larger than life personality combined with their intelligence can sometimes mean they are stubborn. You have to be commanding in the relationship!

Shih Tzus are a dog breed that loves everyone they meet and will happily be introduced to strangers as long as they get their attention! They are an easy going breed, which makes them a one of the best dog breeds for seniors. Shih Tzus are of the least active dog breeds that are equally happy resting on your lap, but, like all dogs enjoy running around in a park. Shih Tzus are known to be difficult to housebreak so they will need lots of training early on to ensure your house is clean!

The Shih Tzu is a lazy dog that does not require the levels of exercise as some larger dog breeds. They are very happy lying on the sofa with their favorite person, therefore, they are one of the best dog breeds for apartments.

The Shih Tzu is a tough dog and they do not tolerate much. They are not the best around children and may snap if their patience is wearing thin!

They can live up to 15 years or older, which makes them one of the longest living dog breeds in the world. Please make sure that you constantly keep their fur in check and take them to get groomed often!

They are a curious breed who like to discover new things and their size makes them the companion to take anywhere. The Bichon Frise have been known to suffer from separation anxiety, therefore, you should not leave your Bichon alone for long periods of time.

Due to their small size, the Bichon Frise adapt well to living in small spaces. They are one of the best dog breeds for apartments. However, they do have a lot of energy so should be taken for daily walks and have regular exercise. 

This dog breed is great with kids and families and other household pets, they are also one of favorite dog breeds with a hypoallergenic coat which makes them the perfect choice for someone with allergies. However, this is something that you should discuss with your allergist as not everyone reacts the same way to the Bichon Frise.

Originally bred to hunt prey such as badgers and foxes, the Scottish Terrier has developed into a wonderful companion, although the Scottish Terrier is known for being very independent and stubborn ! With that being said, they are also a very intelligent and hilarious dog breed. They are a family loving dog breed and enjoy being around their family. The Scottish Terrier is very gentle and playful around children and is good around seniors too. They really do fit into any family!

The Scottish Terrier has really short legs so we wouldn’t recommend going on the longest of walks but the Scottish Terrier like all terriers enjoys letting loose and running around for a short while.

Unlike other terriers, the Scottish Terrier is not yappy and remains relatively quiet unless a stranger approaches, then the Scottish Terrier will sound off a loud bark. All in all , they make a great small hypoallergenic dog!

West Highland White Terrier

Westies also have a very affectionate and loving side and will cuddle with you for hours and keep you company when you feel lonely.

Westies will get along with anyone and they are not a one dog person, instead they form bonds to a number of people. They are known to be very good around children, matching their energy and enthusiasm for hours. The Yorkshire Terrier’s coat needs to be combed or brushed regularly and they need to wash after one of their adventures as the dirt can easily get trapped within the hairs! The Yorkshire Terrier is one of our favorite small hypoallergenic dog breeds. An important point to note is that the hair on the top of the head gets very long, so many owners pull the hair back into a distinctive ponytail to keep the hair out of the dogs face! 

Additionally, the Yorkshire Terrier is one of the longest living dog breeds, living up to 15 years!

Bolognese

The Bolognese is known to be a very craft dog breed and will pull on heart strings until they get their own way. We recommend early training with lots of positive reinforcement and they are a sensitive and stubborn dog breed.

The Bolognese should not be left alone for a long period of time as they are prone to have separation anxiety.

Maltese

The Maltese dog breed has an interesting history, their breed can be traced back into ancient times. This small charming dog breed was immortalised by many ancient civilisations in Greece, Italy and Egypt. They were even mentioned by a famous Greek philosopher called Aristotle! 

Maltese are very people orientated due to their long history as a companion dog. The Maltese is one of the least active dog breeds in the world, however, they are very intelligent and really easy to train. They thoroughly enjoy pleasing their owners. The Shih Tzu responds well to lots of positive reinforcement, after all, how can you not be positive and happy around such a lovely dog breed.

Their love and affection combined with their gentle temperament, making the Shih Tzu one of the best dog breeds for seniors.

The Maltese doesn’t require the space that some larger dogs do and the fact they are a relatively lazy dog means they are a great dog breed for apartments.

The Maltese is prone to getting the chills, especially if they are damp or walking in a cold environment. A nice warm coat is recommended if you live in colder climates.
