Any dog will provide you with love and companionship, which is why many of us have them as companions in our homes. Some people prefer a certain type of dog over another and that’s completely okay, there are always many reasons to have a preference! Large dogs offer protection and are up for those adventures! Labrador Retrievers make great pets for first-time dog owners due to their affectionate and loyal natures. The Labrador is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world and they are frequently trained to aid those with blindness or autism. They are known for being calm and gentle, meaning they are a great family dog as well as a great companion to share the home with as well as being one of the best dog breed for kids and families. In addition, Labrador Retrievers are one of the best dog breeds for seniors. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most loyal dog breeds to their family, and develop bonds with each member, not just with one person. They are friendly to everyone they meet and get along with other animals in the household.
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds and need around an hour exercise every day. This could be running, swimming, or fetch. They are an intelligent dog breed who get great satisfaction out of releasing their energy in fun ways.
Labrador Retrievers are a double-coated dog breed therefore they require regular grooming to keep their coats nice and healthy. Their coat should be brushed regularly as this can alert you to health and skin problems such as hot spots, hair loss or dry skin.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dogs breeds in the world right now. They offer affection, companionship and energy whilst also being easy to train and incredibly gentle. Just like the Labrador, they are excellent choices for therapy or canine assistance as they are one of the most intelligent dog breeds! They are a great family dog and the Golden Retriever develops a bond with each family member, not just one person. They are also one of the best dog breeds for beginners.
Due to their active nature, Golden Retrievers need a good amount of exercise to keep them healthy, dog games are recommended to keep this particular breed physically and mentally stimulated.
The Golden Retriever is known for being a great dog breed for kids and families and other dogs due to their gentle and kind nature. They have an instinct for protecting their pack from anything dangerous so they are great to take to the park with your children as they are another pair of watchful eyes!
Temperament: Confident, Loyal and Territoral
The Bordeaux originated over 600 years ago in the French region of Bordeaux and rose to fame in 1989 after a Bordeaux starred in Tuner and Hooch with Tom Hanks!
The first thing you will notice about the Bordeaux is that they have a rather large head and that they may or may not have some slobber coming out of their mouth! Just more reasons to love them!
The Bordeaux is a devoted and affectionate family dog which is very well known for being docile and sweet, although they do have a stubborn streak. Due to this stubborn streak, they need early socialization and training.
Temperament: Intelligent, Obedient and Protective.
The German Shepherd one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world. They were originally bred as a working dog breed. The German Shepherd is one of the most intelligent dog breeds which means they excel in their ability to follow command and their bravery. Their main mission was to serve and obey their master. The combination of their intelligence and their instinctual willingness to learn and obey makes them one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world as well as one of our favourite working dog breeds. When trained and socialised properly, their stable obedient temperament allows them to bond with all family members as they consider them to be part of their pack. This dog breed is one of the best guarding breeds and they will do anything, even put their lives at risk, to protect their pack. This makes the German Shepherd one of the best dog breeds for protection.
Due to their origins, they need to be kept occupied both mentally and physically therefore they require at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day to ensure they aren’t bored. German Shepherds have a lot of energy and require large amounts of movement everyday to burn their energy!

Temperament: Friendly, Gentle and Outgoing
The Siberian Husky is believed to have originated among a tribe of Siberian nomads called the Chukchi. DNA tests confirm that the Siberian Husky is among one of the oldest dog breeds. Siberian Huskies were bred to pull sleds over long distances in tough terrain in Siberia. Siberian Huskies are adored by many for their friendly and gentle nature, this makes them lousy watch dogs, but, they are one of our favorite large dogs.
Due to their origins pulling sledges, the Siberian Husky is one of the most active dog breeds and have copious amounts of energy. Ensure you take your Siberian Husky on daily long walks, hikes or runs to keep their strength in their legs. These elegant dogs are happy to go on any adventure, however, due to their thick fur keeping them warm in the arctic they are prone to overheating.
Also, the Siberian Husky is one of our favorite working dog breeds.
Temperament: Calm, Confident and Intelligent
A Rottweiler is a calm and confident dog breed and is very self-assured. Originally bred to drive cattle and pull carts for farmers and butchers. Their heritage shows through their broad chest and heavily muscled body.
The Rottweiler is a fantastic guard dog albeit with a mellow temperament. Rottweilers have a natural instinct to protect their pack and will be very demanding in their defence. Please ensure early socialisation to allow them to channel their power and protectiveness, otherwise, they may become a dangerous bully rather than the protector that you want in your household.
Owning a Rottweiler is very challenging but rewarding. Rottweilers are not the best for first time dog owners. You must be able to show your Rottweiler leadership so he can trust you and respect. Otherwise, there is a chance that your Rottweiler will assume the role of top dog for themselves, which can be very bad considering the intelligence and power of the Rottweiler.
Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent dog breeds and are very trainable if you’re firm and consistent in your actions. They may look to test you to see if what you say is actually what you mean, always be specific in what you ask and don’t leave any loopholes for this intelligent dog breed! Their intelligence is just one of the reasons why the Rottweiler features on our favorite large dog breed list!

Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Temperament: Courageous, Tenacious and Tough
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a loving and adventurous companion, even though many people believe this dog to be frightening due to their muscular body and powerful stance. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was created in the early nineteenth century as a fighting dog that was smaller and faster than other dog breeds.
The Staffordshire Bull Terriers life revolves around their family, they are gentle and friendly to people from a very young age. However, that does not mean that they are not alert at all times. This enthusiast dog breed will be protective over their family even if their life depends on it. Due to their love of humans, they are less likely to be protective over property than the humans living inside the property. These are just a few of the reasons why the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of the best dog breeds for protection.
Temperament: Alert, Courageous and Friendly
Originating from the Land of the Rising Sun, this Japanese breed is considered the National Treasure of the Country. The Akita of today is one of the most loyal dog breeds and they will watch over their master and their family members due in part to their roots as a guard dog. However, they can get defensive when it comes to unfamiliar people, places, and animals, so proper socialisation is necessary and they require their owner to be an experienced dog owner. The Akita is a fast learner and can be trained easily, however, they get bored just as fast, so a good training program should be developed to keep the Akita mentally stimulated.
The Akita is an intelligent dog breed as well as being one of the the most loyal dog breeds, however, their independence and stubborn nature can be a problem if they aren’t properly trained. Akita’s require lots of training in their early stages. Using high value and high frequency rewards to motivate them is important. Once trained, they are incredibly loving and protective. Unlike many other large breeds, the Akita doesn’t require hours of exercise, they are generally happy with long brisk walks!
Akita’s have a thick undercoat and this is something that needs to be maintained regularly as they are also prone to malt.
In addition, the Akita is one of the best working dog breeds.
Temperament: Affectionate, Gentle and Protective
Originally bred to hunt wild board, the Great Dane is an elegant breed whose instincts have somewhat been bred out over time. However, that doesn’t mean they are not a great dog breed for protection. The Great Danes sheer size and their extremely loud bark are something that no intruder will want to deal with!
Despite their large size, they are an affectionate and gentle dog breed. They are great around children and have a playful nature. They are an extremely people orientated dog breed and love to be patted and stroked. The Great Dane is known to poke you with their head when they want some loving!
It goes without saying, a dog breed this large needs a lot of space to live. They need room to move around and are prone to knocking things off the coffee table or side unit with their massive table. We would recommend it is best to have a large house with a back yard so the Great Dane can stretch their legs without the fear of them knocking something valuable over.
Temperament: Alert, Confident and Obedient
The Doberman Pinschers is one of our favorite large dog breed even though their reputation precedes them. They are generally stereotyped as highly aggressive and vicious. Whilst, it is true that they one of the best dog breeds for protection, they are usually very gentle and loving. They are fearless when protecting their family and their home if they perceive danger. The Doberman Pinscher is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world.
Due to their high intelligence, they need plenty of mental challenges to keep them from becoming bored. Their size combined with their intellect means they need a strong pack leader who can properly socialise them and train them, as well as keep them busy every day.
