Any dog will provide you with love and companionship, which is why many of us have them as companions in our homes. Some people prefer a certain type of dog over another and that’s completely okay, there are always many reasons to have a preference! Medium dog breeds encompass the best of both worlds, they are large enough to go on adventures and not run out of steam but they are small enough to also be a lapdog! The Poodle is protective of his home and family, and if strangers approach your house, they are known to sound a warning bark to let you know. Their easy going nature and ability to learn makes them one of the best dog breeds for beginners as well as one of the best dog breeds for seniors.
The Poodle is one of the smartest dog breeds in the world. Their intelligence, playful nature and the fact that they are one of the most energetic dog breeds means that obedience training is essential in keeping your Poodle mentally and physically stimulated. In addition, they also should be taken for exercise daily and they enjoy and excel at dog games due to their intelligent nature. Poodles are energetic dogs that need plenty of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy. The Poodle is one of our favorite medium dog breeds.

Even though The Cocker Spaniel is a beloved family dog breed, they were originally bred to hunt game! They are never happier than making you happy and are loyal to the bone! They are highly trainable and can thrive in any living situation, whether it is an apartment with regular exercise outdoors or a house with a yard for them to run free! The Cocker Spaniel is truly a magnificent dog breed and one of our favorite medium dog breeds.
The Cocker Spaniel is one of the most active dog breeds in the world due to their origins as a hunting dog. The Cocker Spaniel needs regular exercise and dog games to please their instinctual nature. If you are out walking your Cocker Spaniel don’t be surprised if they try to run off after birds of small animals! They also love to swim, so be careful when around water as they may run towards it!

Border Collies are a real family dog, they are one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world. The Border Collie is one of the smartest dog breeds in the world as well as one of the most active dog breeds. They have ranked as the smartest dog breed in the world in many studies. With this level of intellect comes deep loyalty to their masters as long as they are mentally and physically stimulated. They are a friendly breed who love to play, which makes them one of our favourite medium dog breeds.
They need lots of space to run, a big back yard or a farm is the best place for them after all they were originally bred for herding livestock! The Border Collie could become very bored in a small apartment or somewhere where they could not let their mind and legs run free. They also thoroughly enjoy playing games with children, which makes the Border Collie one of the best
Border Collies are an energetic and lively dog breed. Due to this, their coat needs a lot of maintenance to ensure that there is no dirt and debris in there from their day-to-day activities.
Also, the Border Collie is one of the best herding dog breeds.
Temperament: Friendly, Intelligent and Trainable.
Labradoodles are an intentional mix between Poodles and Labrador Retrievers. They were originally bred to be a hypoallergenic dog breed as well as to be trained as guide dogs for visually-impaired people. A Labradoodle is at their happiest when they’re with the people that they love and they will shower their family with affection and devotion. They have the energy of the Labrador Retriever and the work ethic of both the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle.
Just like their ancestors they are extremely affectionate and they are one of the best dog breeds for kids and families. They are calm and quiet whilst at your side when you are indoors, but at a moment’s notice, the Labradoodle is ready to play a game of fetch or go on an adventure. They are also very good with other dogs and pets, however, just like most dog breeds, they need the proper training and socialisation to reach their potential for living with other animals.
Temperament: Caring, Curious and Energetic
The Beagle is one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world. The Beagle is a loving dog breed that want to please their owner making them one of the best family dogs. Their loving nature means that they find it easy to bond with everyone in the family and consider them pack members. This dog breed is great with children and other animals. Beagles are a playful breed and their sturdy, compact frame allows them to be one of the best dogs for kids and families, and they can play without fear of injury to both themselves or the children. Beagles have an impressive sense of smell and are even used as detection dogs in some airports but due to their friendly nature they can do their job without making anyone uncomfortable! Beagles are one of our favourite medium dog breeds.
Due to the Beagles small size they require less upkeep then some of the bigger dogs. They can be happy in a flat as long as they are walked regularly. A back garden would be preferable, but be aware, a Beagle may wander off when it is following its nose so it is much safer if there is a fence!
The Beagle’s short coat requires regular bathing and daily brushing. Naturally, other care includes a balanced diet and regular exercise to prevent obesity. The Beagle is one of the longest living dog breeds, living up to 12-15 years.
Also, due to the Beagles strong sense of smell it easily becomes distracted by attractive scents, therefore the Beagle needs regular and consistent use of a leash when out for walks!
Temperament: Gentle, Sociable and Sweet
The English Bulldog is a favourite amongst people who love staying indoors and need a cuddle buddy! The English bulldog was originally bred to compete in a sport called bullbaiting and also so drive cattle to market. Bulldog is one of the least active dog breeds. They are stubborn and lazy, which makes them perfect for the sofa! An older English bulldog may not be extremely enthusiastic about going for a walk or doing some exercise. However, they still need to be taken on daily exercise just like many other dog breeds. They are very happy just lying around the house, or on their owners lap!
The English Bulldog is a sociable and courageous dog, which makes this particular dog breed an exception watchdog. The English Bulldog has a tendency to be a slow learner, but once they understand something, they never forget it!
Temperament: Hyper, Energetic and Curious
Boxers were originally bred to be guard dogs, however, today they are part of the working dogs group. The Boxer is often described as a “hearing” guard dog as they are watchful and alert. Which are just some of the reasons as to why the Boxer is one of our favorite dogs for protection. When they are not playing around, they are very self assured. They are great around kids as they are very patient. Whilst boxers mostly find homes as loving members of the family they still have high energy levels and require plenty of exercise.
The Boxer is one of the most active dog breeds in the world and they also have need for companionship. Boxers are ideal for people who will be with them most of the time or have someone in the house often. They need regular exercise to maintain a happy and healthy life. They are an energetic dog breeds and love playing with other dogs as well as long walks and games are a must.

Australian Shepherd Dog
Temperament: Energetic, Intelligent and Hard Working
The Australian Shepherd dog is a strong willed dog breed, that will easily take up the dominate role in the home unless you give them confident leadership. Originally bred as a herding dog they are a loyal companion who will be protective of home and family and weary of strangers. They are known to sound a warning barn if they see or hear anything suspicious. The Australian Shepherd dog is one of the best dog breeds for protection.
They are great around children but beware, due to their origins as a herding dog, they may try and herd the children! Please ensure early you take your Australian Shepherd Dog to training in their youth to avoid this from happening! The Australian Shepherd Dog is one of our favorite herding dog breeds.
Due to their high intelligence and energy, they can be very loud and destructive if they are not getting the mental stimulation and exercise that they crave. The Australian Shepherd Dog needs at least half an hour to an hour of exercise a day, which should be high-energy activities. They will not do well in a small apartments as they need large space to roam around.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Temperament: Active, Intelligent and Loyal
Originating in Pembrokeshire in Wales the Pembrokeshire Welsh Corgi has an interesting story. According to folklore, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi sprang from the lairs of elves and fairies! The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was originally bred to herd cattle, horses and sheep. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a very active and intelligent dog breed who are easy to train and even more eager to learn. Which is just a few of the reasons they are one of our favourite medium sized dog breeds!
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are a very vocal dog breed and they have a tendency to bark at anything and everything!
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are known to be prone to overeating so please keep them on a healthy diet and take them out for daily exercise. Despite their small frame, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi loves running in the park or in the yard due to their history as a herding dog. Infact, they are one of our favorite herding dog breeds.
Temperament: Independent, Protective and Proud
The Chow Chow is a said to be one of the oldest dog breed, and many genetic tests have proven that to be true. This ancient breed is believed to have been originated in Northern China and Mongolia. The Chow Chow is a very distinctive-looking dog breed with a mane of hair. They are a very proud and independent dog breed who are suspicious of strangers. However, the Chow Chow is known to be a lazy dog and is happy to lay on the couch for hours. What a good looking and lazy dog breed!
The Chow Chow needs an owner who understand and respects their independence but does not let the dog take over. It is imperative that the Chow Chow is socialised from an early age and introduced to new dogs, people and situations as soon as possible to ensure that they’re relaxed as adults.
The Chow Chows main like hair needs to be brushed at least twice a week to keep their coat in good condition.
