We have many reasons to want a guard dog whether it be for personal protection, protection of our property or simply to know when a visitor is at the door. Guard dogs sometimes get a bad reputation for their traits but these same traits make them incredibly loyal pets.

The best guard dogs are brave, devoted and intelligent enough to know when to fight off an intruder. Like any dogs, the correct training when they are young will mean that they will fulfil their job as guard dogs and protect you with their lives.

Here at The Pet Embassy, we have compiled our best dogs for protection.

Please note that like any breed round up, all the following choices are subjective and are far from being exhaustive. We know there are many other wonderful dog breeds that could have made the list and the list is in no particular order!

Boxer

Temperament: Hyper, Energetic and Curious

Boxers were originally bred to be guard dogs, however, today they are part of the working dogs group. The Boxer is often described as a “hearing” guard dog as they are watchful and alert. Which are just some of the reasons as to why the Boxer is one of our favorite dogs for protection. When they are not playing around, they are very self assured. They are great around kids as they are very patient. Whilst boxers mostly find homes as loving members of the family they still have high energy levels and require plenty of exercise.

The Boxer is one of the most active dog breeds in the world and they also have need for companionship. Boxers are ideal for people who will be with them most of the time or have someone in the house often. They need regular exercise to maintain a happy and healthy life. They are an energetic dog breeds and love playing with other dogs as well as long walks and games are a must.

The Boxer is one of our favorite working dog breeds as well as one of our favorite medium dog breeds.

Belgian Malinois

Temperament: Alert, Devoted and Protective

The Belgian Malinois is one of the most active dog breeds. Their origins were to herd sheep, however, their versatile nature means they are often police or protection dogs now. They are a great working dog who is confident and protective in any situation and make excellent watch dogs. They are one of our favorite dogs for protection.

The Belgian Malinois is one of the most energetic dog breeds and is therefore built for action and a leisurely walk will not suffice. They need exercise several times a day, long brisk walks and jogging are the best for the Belgian Malinois. They are an intelligent breed who thrives with some kind of job to do and regular exercise. The Belgian Malinois enjoy regular participation in dog sports. They also require lots of mental stimulation, like tracking and nose work, as this is what they were originally bred for.

Also, the Belgian Malinois is one of favorite herding dog breeds.

German Shepherd

Temperament: Intelligent, Obedient and Protective.

German Shepherds is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. German Shepherd were originally bred as working dogs and their main mission was to serve and obey their master. They are one of the best dogs at following orders and their obedience is second to none. The combination of their intelligence and their instinctual willingness to learn and obey makes them one of the most loyal dog breeds in the world as well as one of our favourite working dog breeds. When trained and socialised properly, their stable obedient temperament allows them to bond with all family members as they consider them to be part of their pack.

This dog breed is one of the best guarding breeds and they will do anything, even put their lives at risk, to protect their pack. This makes the German Shepherd one of the best dog breeds for protection.

Due to their origins, they need to be kept occupied both mentally and physically therefore they require at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day to ensure they aren’t bored. German Shepherds have a lot of energy and require large amounts of movement everyday to burn their energy!

German shepherds are double-coated dogs therefore they require regular grooming to keep their coats nice and healthy. Their coat should be brushed regularly as this can alert you to health and skin problems such as hot spots, hair loss or dry skin.

Doberman Pinscher

Temperament: Alert, Confident and Obedient

The Doberman Pinschers reputation precedes them. They are generally stereotyped as highly aggressive and vicious. Whilst, it is true that they one of the best dog breeds for protection, they are usually very gentle and loving. They are fearless when protecting their family and their home if they perceive danger. The Doberman Pinscher is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world.

Due to their high intelligence, they need plenty of mental challenges to keep them from becoming bored. Their size combined with their intellect means they need a strong pack leader who can properly socialise them and train them, as well as keep them busy every day.

Additionally, the Doberman Pinscher is one of our favourite large dog breeds.

Rottweiler

Temperament: Calm, Confident and Intelligent

A Rottweiler is a calm and confident dog breed and is very self-assured. Originally bred to drive cattle and pull carts for farmers and butchers. Their heritage shows through their broad chest and heavily muscled body.

The Rottweiler is a fantastic guard dog albeit with a mellow temperament, making the Rottweiler on of our best dog breeds for protection. Rottweilers have a natural instinct to protect their pack and will be very demanding in their defence. Please ensure early socialisation to allow them to channel their power and protectiveness, otherwise, they may become a dangerous bully rather than the protector that you want in your household.

Owning a Rottweiler is very challenging but rewarding. Rottweilers are not the best for first time dog owners. You must be able to show your Rottweiler leadership so he can trust you and respect. Otherwise, there is a chance that your Rottweiler will assume the role of top dog for themselves, which can be very bad considering the intelligence and power of the Rottweiler.

Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent dog breeds and are very trainable if you’re firm and consistent in your actions. They may look to test you to see if what you say is actually what you mean, always be specific in what you ask and don’t leave any loopholes for this intelligent dog breed!

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a loving and adventurous companion, even though many people believe this dog to be frightening due to their muscular body and powerful stance. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was created in the early nineteenth century as a fighting dog that was smaller and faster than other dog breeds.

The Staffordshire Bull Terriers life revolves around their family, they are gentle and friendly to people from a very young age. However, that does not mean that they are not alert at all times. This enthusiast dog breed will be protective over their family even if their life depends on it. Due to their love of humans, they are less likely to be protective over property than the humans living inside the property. These are just a few of the reasons why the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of the best dog breeds for protection.

Australian Shepherd Dog

The Australian Shepherd dog is a strong willed dog breed, that will easily take up the dominate role in the home unless you give them confident leadership. Originally bred as a herding dog they are a loyal companion who will be protective of home and family and weary of strangers. They are known to sound a warning barn if they see or hear anything suspicious. The Australian Shepherd dog is one of our favorite medium dog breeds.

They are great around children but beware, due to their origins as a herding dog, they may try and herd the children! Please ensure early you take your Australian Shepherd Dog to training in their youth to avoid this from happening! The Australian Shepherd Dog is one of our favorite herding dog breeds.

Due to their high intelligence and energy, they can be very loud and destructive if they are not getting the mental stimulation and exercise that they crave. The Australian Shepherd Dog needs at least half an hour to an hour of exercise a day, which should be high-energy activities. They will not do well in a small apartments as they need large space to roam around.

Caucasian Shepherd Dog

Size: Large

Temperament: Courageous, Loyal and Strong

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a fierce protector of the family. They are known to not back down from a fight even if it is against bears or wolves. Originally bred in the Caucasus Mountain region to protect shepherds and their herds from predators. Their heritage means their number one instinct is to protect their pack at all costs, hence, why they are a great guard dog and are one of the best dogs for protection.

Whilst the Caucasian Shepherd Dog is a very large dog breed, they are very low energy and do not require the robust activities like some of the other more energetic dog breeds. Due to this, weight gain is a strong possibility and must be addressed with a proper diet and regular exercise.

With this being said, we think it is best if the Caucasian Shepherd Dog has a yard to play around and doesn’t have to manoeuvre around in tight spaces in the house.

Great Dane

Size: Large

Temperament: Affectionate, Gentle and Protective

Originally bred to hunt wild board, the Great Dane is an elegant breed whose instincts have somewhat been bred out over time. However, that doesn’t mean they are not a great dog breed for protection. The Great Danes sheer size and their extremely loud bark are something that no intruder will want to deal with!

Despite their large size, they are an affectionate and gentle dog breed. They are great around children and have a playful nature. They are an extremely people orientated dog breed and love to be patted and stroked. The Great Dane is known to poke you with their head when they want some loving!

It goes without saying, a dog breed this large needs a lot of space to live. They need room to move around and are prone to knocking things off the coffee table or side unit with their massive table. We would recommend it is best to have a large house with a back yard so the Great Dane can stretch their legs without the fear of them knocking something valuable over.

The Great Dane is one of our favorite large dog breeds.

Bullmastiff

Temperament: Fearless, Independent and Strong

The Bullmastiff is a fearless family guardian. They are known for being weary around strangers but having a soft spot for their loved ones. The Bullmastiff is known as the “silent watchdog” as they hardly ever make any noise and spend most of their time on the couch. However, once they hear or see anything slightly suspicious they are ready for anything. Their size and confidence is enough to scare off any intruders. All of these reasons are why they the Bullmastiff is one of the best dog dog breeds for protection.

The Bullmastiff is a strong, independent dog and will do better than other dogs when left alone for long periods of time. They are good around children but due to their size they may accidentally knock down the child, so please keep an eye out when your Bullmastiff is playing with children.

The Bullmastiff is known to drool and they are prone to gassiness. If this is not your cup of tea, we would recommend looking at some of the other fantastic breeds out there.

The Bullmastiff is one of the least active dog breeds. A few short walks and a little playtime will meet their energy demands. They are a very mellow dog breed and are happy living in an apartment or flat, as long as you ensure that they get their regular exercise.
