The Pug’s face, with deep wrinkles around big, dark eyes and a flat round face, can’t help but make you smile. It is thought that the Pug’s name stems from the Latin word for “fist” as their face resembles a human fist. We love the Pug’s unique look, which is just one of the reasons why they are one of our favorite small dog breeds.

The Pug is a lazy dog for a lazy person, in fact, they are so lazy they are one of our least active dog breeds, they are happy to remain snuggled on the couch for hours as long as they are getting their attention, which is why they are a great dog breed for seniors.

Given that Pugs are a lazy dog breed and do not require as much space as other larger dog breeds, they are one of the best dog breeds for apartments. 

Pugs are a sweet dog breed and generally get along with everyone and everything, meaning they are one of the best dog breeds for kids and families and they also get along with other dogs. 

The Pug is a great dog breed for beginners and first time dog owners who live a less active lifestyle.

Even though the coats are short, Pugs are a double-coated breed. Pugs are typically fawn-coloured or black. The coat is short and smooth, however, pugs still shed a lot. The Maltese dog breed has an interesting history, their breed can be traced back into ancient times. This small charming dog breed was immortalised by many ancient civilisations in Greece, Italy and Egypt. They were even mentioned by a famous Greek philosopher called Aristotle! 

Maltese are very people orientated due to their long history as a companion dog. The Maltese is one of the least active dog breeds in the world, however, they are very intelligent and really easy to train. They thoroughly enjoy pleasing their owners. The Shih Tzu responds well to lots of positive reinforcement, after all, how can you not be positive and happy around such a lovely dog breed.

The Maltese doesn’t require the space that some larger dogs do and the fact they are a relatively lazy dog means they are a great dog breed for apartments.

Temperament: Affectionate, Cheerful and Sensitive

Bichon Frise were actually originally bred to be a companion dog. Therefore, they are naturally a great dog breed for beginners and first time dog owners. They are a curious breed who like to discover new things and their size makes them the companion to take anywhere. The Bichon Frise have been known to suffer from separation anxiety, therefore, you should not leave your Bichon alone for long periods of time.

Due to their small size, the Bichon Frise adapt well to living in small spaces. They are one of the best dog breeds for apartments. However, they do have a lot of energy so should be taken for daily walks and have regular exercise. 

This dog breed is great with kids and families and other household pets, they are also one of favorite dog breeds with a hypoallergenic coat which makes them the perfect choice for someone with allergies. However, this is something that you should discuss with your allergist as not everyone reacts the same way to the Bichon Frise. 

Chihuahua

Their personality makes them an adorable companion and they can really brighten up the mood in any home. Chihuahuas are one of the most loyal dog breeds around, so much so they are often described as “Clingy”; that’s how loyal this breed is in general! Due to their small size and expressive personality, chihuahuas don’t require the long walks that other dog breeds do, which makes them one of our least active dog breeds, they are equally as happy in a flat as they are in a massive yard, as long as they get as much attention as possible, which makes them one of the best dog breeds for apartments.

However, their small size means they can quite easily be injured when playing so it is best to avoid having them play with children or larger dogs if possible. Another positive of their size is that they are very easy to maintain and need regular brushing.

The Chihuahua is also one of the longest living dog breeds. The Chihuahua can live up to 20 years old! In general, Chihuahuas live to be around 12 to 14 years. Chihuahuas are one of the oldest living dog breeds on the planet.

Pomeranian

Pomeranians are alert and curious about the world around them and they sometimes forget their size! Pomeranians have a loud bark and make excellent watchdogs. Their looks and their personality are just some of the reasons as to why they are one of favorite small dog breeds.

Pomeranians are not an overly dependent dog breed therefore make an excellent choice for older people or those who are busy most of the day. They are one of our least active dog breeds in the world but like all dogs they do enjoy going for walks, which makes the Pomeranian one of the best dog breeds for apartments. In addition, they are also one of the best dog breeds for seniors.

Fortunately, their coat is not as high-maintenance as it looks. Regular brushing and daily exercise is all you need to keep your Pomeranian happy. They are highly adaptable and once socialised can live in harmony with other pets.

Pomeranians typically live about 12 to 16 years, which makes them one of the longest living dog breeds. Pomeranians aren’t especially susceptible to many illnesses aside from luxating patellas (knee caps that have shifted out of place), so just be sure give your Pomeranian a good diet and take them for plenty of exercise.

An important point to note is that the hair on the top of the head gets very long, so many owners pull the hair back into a distinctive ponytail to keep the hair out of the dogs face!

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus are a dog breed that loves everyone they meet and will happily be introduced to strangers as long as they get their attention! They are an easy going breed, which makes them a great choice for seniors. Shih Tzus are of the least active dog breeds that are equally happy resting on your lap, but, like all dogs enjoy running around in a park. Shih Tzus are known to be difficult to housebreak so they will need lots of training early on to ensure your house is clean!

The Shih Tzu is a lazy dog that does not require the levels of exercise as some larger dog breeds. They are very happy lying on the sofa with their favorite person, therefore, they are one of the best dog breeds for apartments.

Please keep the greyhound on a leash until it is properly trained as they have a strong prey drive and will take off after a rabbit before you even see it!

Due to their thin coats, it is important to note that Greyhounds can get the shivers, therefore we recommend buying a warm coat for your dog if you live in a cold climate.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
